ABOUT THIS BEACH
Basin Beach is a small stretch of sand tucked in beside Mona Vale Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Sheltered by the Mona Vale headland, it’s usually much calmer than its neighbour, making it a popular choice for families with young kids. The south end is especially safe for little ones to splash about, while the northern end draws snorkellers, scuba divers and fishers thanks to its clear water and rocky outcrops.
While the surf here is mostly flat, there are a couple of exceptions. A small break forms right next to the Mona Vale rock pool, perfect for bodyboarders or beginners, and further out at the northern point there’s a powerful rock break. This wave is only for highly experienced surfers as it can be unpredictable and dangerous, especially when the swell is big. Even swimmers should take care at the north end, as rips can appear even when the water looks calm.
For something different, follow the steps at the northern end of Basin Beach up to Mona Vale Headland. The walk is short but rewarding, with panoramic views up and down the coastline. Sunrise and sunset from the headland are particularly beautiful and well worth the climb.
