ABOUT THIS BEACH
Avalon Beach sits right at the northern end of Sydney’s famous Bends, where the road winds between headlands and suddenly opens up to a wide stretch of sand. Locals call it “Av.” and it’s known for its laid-back, surf-centric community with a creative village feel. The beach itself is long, sandy and backed by grassy dunes, with plenty of space to spread out even on a busy summer’s day.
The surf is a huge drawcard. Advanced surfers head to the south end near the rocks for consistent, punchy waves, while beginners and surf schools stick to the north end where the swell is smaller and easier to manage. Families often choose the Avalon rock pool on the southern point - a safe spot for kids to splash around - or the patrolled flags during the warmer months. Behind the sand you’ll also find a skate park, playground and shady grass areas for picnics, making it one of the most versatile beaches on the peninsula.
Avalon village is just a short walk from the beach and adds to its charm. The streets are filled with cafés, bakeries, boutique shops and surf stores, so it’s easy to grab coffee, lunch or a takeaway picnic. With its mix of surf breaks, family-friendly facilities and a buzzing local scene, Avalon Beach offers more than just a swim - it’s a full day out.
